Virginia Tech will be the first official visit destination for 6-1, 190-pound DB/WR T.J. Lawrence, a 4-star prospect out of Kathleen High School in Lakeland, Florida. One of the main reasons Virginia Tech remains in heavy contention with the talented prospect is the work of a former Kathleen product.

And that former Kathleen product is none other than Tech Defensive Backs Coach Torrian Gray.

“He is [a big reason why Tech is receiving an official visit],” Lawrence said of Gray. “He is a real cool coach. He is the coolest coach I’ve met out of all of the ones I’ve met.”

Lawrence, who made an unofficial visit to Tech back in the spring, is looking for one simple thing on this weekend’s trip.

“If it feels like home, then I’ll like it,” Lawrence said.

Virginia Tech will be the first official visit, but it will very likely not be the last. Lawrence says he intends to make all five official visits before coming to a decision. He listed Florida, Miami and South Carolina as three other destinations, but did not list a fourth.

Lawrence was at South Carolina this past Saturday for the Florida game.

“It was pretty good,” Lawrence said of his time in Columbia. “It was cold, though. Real cold.”

Earlier this fall, reports had Florida leading in this race. Florida has made a big push, especially after Lawrence visited Gainesville to see the Gators take on Tennessee in September. Right now, though, Lawrence does not name a clear favorite.

“That visit was a while back,” said Lawrence, who plans to return to Gainesville for Florida’s November 24th match-up with Florida State. “I remember that the fans were crazy. Urban Meyer is a pretty cool coach.”

Lawrence, who has tallied close to 60 receptions for over 700 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, has helped Kathleen to an 8-2 record. Though his team lost to rival Lakeland this past Friday, they still did make the playoffs.

A talent at wide receiver and defensive back, Lawrence is being recruited by Tech as a defensive back.

Stay tuned for more from T.J. following this weekend’s visit.
