6-2, 245-pound defensive end Everett Dawkins has turned in an excellent senior season so far, having racked up 74 tackles including 17 tackles-for-loss and five sacks in helping Bynes (Duncan, S.C.) to an 8-0 record. Besides those impressive stats, Dawkins also has 23 “big plays” and 62 “execution points” for head coach Chris Miller.

Miller constitutes a “big play” as a play that changes the momentum of the game. An execution point is awarded for executing an assignment correctly even if that player doesn’t make the play. Dawkins leads the team in the latter category.

“He is a very big part of the team,” Miller said of Dawkins, who sees time at defensive end and defensive tackle. “He is a big part of our defense. Our defense has played very well. It has played well in big games.”

Dawkins has certainly filled up the stat sheet – he also has 28 quarterback hurries and four fumble recoveries – but the leadership department may be where he has made the most impact.

“Everett is playing unbelievable,” Miller said. “He has done a great job on and off the field. He has been a great leader for us. He has really stepped into the leadership role and is now the typical guy we want to have leading the football team. In his senior year, he just wants to have a good season and do everything other seniors did for him in the past. He has stepped up and wants to keep the tradition going. I’m proud of him.”

Virginia Tech is one of many schools to extend a scholarship offer to Dawkins. Coach Charley Wiles stopped by Byrnes within the past few weeks to re-emphasize Virginia Tech’s interest.

“I know he gets contact everyday from different people,” Miller said. “I think the big name schools are still there – Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Florida State, Michigan State, N.C. State, Wake Forest… Illinois is there and I believe Wisconsin is also. They are all coming around just to talk and let him know that they are still interested.”

While Dawkins reportedly favors Florida State, he does plan to visit other schools. In fact, Miller believes that his star will make all five official visits before coming to a decision. He also believes there is a chance that Dawkins makes an unofficial trip to Blacksburg next
