The University of Virginia staff knocked out two birds with one stone this morning, when 6-4, 290-pound Norview (Norfolk, VA) defensive lineman Klinton “Buddy” Ruff verbally committed to the ‘Hoos. Ruff is Virginia’s first defensive line recruit as well as its first in-state recruit of the 2008 recruiting class.
“I verbally committed to Virginia this morning,” Ruff said.
Making a commitment before the start of his senior season is a change in plans for Ruff, who just last weekend indicated that he would like to make official visits first.
“It kind of just hit me that I wanted to make a decision before my season started,” Ruff said. “After talking it over with my parents and coaches, I just decided to get this out of the way early. I love Virginia and the coaching staff. They made me feel real comfortable.”
Ruff chose Virginia over Virginia Tech and other offers including Connecticut, East Carolina and Oklahoma. His relationship with the University of Virginia coaches – one he has been able to develop through numerous visits over the past two years – set the Cavs apart.
Coach London and coach Belin are great,” Ruff said. “Working with them [at camp over the past two years], I felt I have developed a good relationship with them. I think they are going to put me in the best position to succeed. I trust them and I know they trust me. I felt at home with them.
“When I told coach London about my decision, he was ecstatic.”
A solid student, Ruff says he is “excited because Virginia is one of the top public schools in the country.”
As a junior last season, Ruff, who led Norview in tackles-for-loss from the defensive end position, earned first-team all-Eastern district honors at defensive line. Ruff also plays offensive tackle for head coach Robert Toran.
