New Hanover (Wilmington, N.C.) OL/DL Nick Becton ‘s first year of high school football was last season as a junior, when he says a friend “convinced me to come out and play.” He is happy he made that decision, as the 6-6, 290-pound prospect now holds offers from Alabama, East Carolina, Maryland, N.C. State, South Carolina and, after this past weekend, Virginia Tech.

Becton arrived in Blacksburg last Friday night and was given a tour of the campus by his primary recruiter, coach Charley Wiles.

“It was a real nice campus and everything,” Becton said. “I liked the facilities. I liked the coaching staff. They were just easy to talk to.”

After a camp performance Becton called “all right,” Virginia Tech head coach extended a scholarship offer.

“It was exciting,” Becton said. “It is an offer from another ACC school. They have a really good football team, a good football program.”

Becton does not seem close to making a college decision. He is also not sure how he will come to his decision, though he knows he wants to go to a school “where I feel most comfortable and where I think I fit in best.”

“I’m kind of wide open right now,” Becton said. “I don’t know right now if I’m going to take official visits.”

This off-season, Becton has worked hard to improve his game and to get stronger for his senior season. Prior to playing varsity football last year, he was primarily a basketball player. He did well in his first season in football, though he admits his learning curve was steep.

“Last year, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just did what my coach told me to do. I have learned better technique this off-season. I feel more confident.”

Becton is being recruited primarily for offense. He did play on both sides of the line last season and some programs, including Virginia Tech, have also mentioned defensive tackle as a possibility.
