6-6, 315-pound OT/DL Vinston Painter , rated the #1 prospect in the state in TSL’s Pre-Summer Top 30, has whittled his long list of schools to five. And this time it seems to be a final five. The Maury (Norfolk, VA) star is happy to have his list narrowed and continues to be focused towards his senior season.

“I have cut it down to five,” Painter said. “There is Virginia Tech, Florida, Georgia, Miami and Penn State.”

Virginia Tech and Florida continue to be the top two schools and Painter says they remain “even at the top.” He discussed how the other three programs were able to make the top five.

“I didn’t really get to visit all of those schools, so it was just from talking to the coaches,” Painter said. “Those are the main coaches I talk to most frequently. I’ve gotten a chance to know the coaches and I got a good feeling from them.”

As of now, Painter says he “more than likely” will make all five official visits. At the very least, the talented big man plans to make some of his official trips.

“I think I have to at least take a few,” Painter said of official visits.

In terms of unofficial visits, Painter has not made any this summer. Virginia Tech is hosting another one-day camp this Saturday and Painter did not rule out making the trip, but he isn’t a definite to make it either.

“I’m not sure yet,” Painter said of making the visit to Blacksburg on Saturday. “I’ll have to see. Maybe.”

Maury’s varsity football program has made the regional playoffs each of the past two seasons. Despite losing several key playmakers from last season, Painter and company are confident heading into this season. Painter has been working hard on strength and conditioning and says he has upped his max bench press to 405. He also said he recently ran a 5.0 in the 40-yard dash recently.

“I’m feeling pretty good about our season,” Painter said. “The team and myself are feeling good.”
