Prior to last Saturday, Virginia Tech was the heavy favorite for Amherst (VA) star Peter Rose. The 6-1, 180-pound ATH prospect had a great visit to Virginia for its Elite Junior Day last Saturday, though, and the Cavs are now back in contention.
“I went to UVa thinking it would be another visit and pretty much Tech was on my mind,” Rose said. “When I got on the field and talked to the coaches, it kind of changed my mind to where UVa and Tech are neck and neck. Both have reasons why I should join their programs. Coach Groh, Coach Poindexter, Coach Lineburg…they persuaded me a lot towards UVa by talking about getting a degree. Tech and UVa are now battling it out.”
Rose discussed the strengths of each of his favorites. Though he has offers from other schools including Navy and Syracuse, his decision is down to the two in-state programs.
“With UVa, it is more about me getting my degree from there,” Rose said. “If I didn’t play football after college, I’d have a degree that could help me get almost any job.
“With Virginia Tech, everybody seems like a family there. They all have each other’s back.”
From here, Rose says he will research both programs to determine where he fits best. He does not have any visits lined up to either school, so he will likely decide without making any other trips. He hopes to have a decision before the start of his senior season.
“I’m just trying to be laid back about it,” Rose said of making his college choice. “At the same time, I want to make sure I make my decision before football season. I want to do it before our first game.”
Rose is an outstanding quarterback for Amherst but projects as a wide receiver or defensive back on the next level. Virginia is recruiting him to play wide receiver, while Virginia Tech likes him initially as a defensive back. He claims no position preference.
