With Virginia Tech’s first Senior Football Camp of 2007 in our rear view
mirror, it’s time to take a step back and take an overall view of the Hokies’
recruiting this year. There have been some interesting commitments so far this
year, and some interesting comments from camp prospects. Judging from Chris
Horne’s updates, the coaching staff made a great impression on everyone who
attended the camp last weekend.

Jake Johnson

If you’ve been reading Horne’s updates – and if you’re reading this Road to
Signing Day, then you probably have – you might be asking yourself one thing:
where in the world did Jake Johnson come from? Apparently he was the most
impressive recruit at Virginia Tech’s camp on Saturday, and he impressed many of
the other prospects who were in attendance.

“His size is real big and he can move real well for his size,” Tony
Gregory said of Jake Johnson.

Terrell Manning said: “[Jake Johnson] reminded me of A.J. Hawk. He
looked great.”

Fellow linebacker recruit Lyndell Gibson told Kyle Tucker of the Norfolk
Virginian-Pilot: “That dude looks like he could run through four brick
walls. And would. It’s going to be real fun playing next to that bull.”

You probably knew that Johnson committed to Virginia Tech recently, but might
not have thought much of it. Good solid pickup, I thought. It’s good that we got
a recruit over UVA and Maryland. Then I read his interview with Chris Horne, and
laughed. Johnson said:

“I hope to get in as a true freshman. Physically, I think I’m ready.
