Stafford (Falmouth, VA) star linebacker Jake Johnson verbally committed to Virginia Tech on Tuesday, choosing the Hokies over offers from Maryland and Virginia. I caught up with 6-2, 230-pound junior for a mini Q&A to discuss his decision.

In his junior season, Johnson, an all-district performer, totaled 125 tackles, including 27 tackles-for-loss, and nine sacks. At middle linebacker, he brings a combination of speed – he averages a 4.6 flat in the 40 – and strength – he can bench press 385 pounds and squats 500 pounds.

TSL: Talk about your decision to commit to Virginia Tech.

Jake Johnson: “When I went down a week or two ago for my unofficial visit (his first ever visit to Tech), I really just fell in love with the campus and everything going on. TSL: Do you feel set on your decision, or is there a possibility that you will revisit it later on?

Jake Johnson: “I’m set on my decision.”

TSL: Have you followed Virginia Tech for a long time?

Jake Johnson: “Not really too much. I just started watching football my ninth grade year because it was only like my second year playing. I watched a little of Virginia because my parents live in Charlottesville and I used to go down there all the time, but I didn’t pay much attention to football in general until about ninth grade. I didn’t keep up with Virginia Tech until last year.”

TSL: What position is Virginia Tech recruiting you to play?

Jake Johnson: “The Mike
