The Evaluation period has gone well for junior defensive back Robert Blanton. Part of one of the top high school defensive backfields in the country, the 6-1, 175-pound Blanton has tallied over 20 Division 1A scholarship offers and has seen numerous head coaches make their way through Butler High School (Matthews, N.C.).
Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer has been one of those coaches walking through Butler’s hallways recently. Blanton and some of his teammates plan to return the favor and visit Virginia Tech next month, for the June 9th camp.
“Yes, sir,” Blanton replied when asked if he planned to return to Virginia Tech soon. “I’m going to camp on the June 9th. I think a couple of teammates are coming too. I think it will be a bunch of us. I’m going to see how the Virginia Tech coaches coach and the different techniques they use.”
Blanton visited Virginia Tech once before, on the weekend of the men’s basketball game versus Clemson.
“It was a great visit,” Blanton recalled of his March 4th experience at Virginia Tech. “They should have won the basketball game, though (laughs).”
The talented prospect, primarily a cornerback in high school, also visited other schools this spring. Notre Dame was one of those schools and a visit that well particularly well.
“I went up there for spring break and visited them,” Blanton said of Notre Dame. “It was a great atmosphere. It is a great school and a great visit.”
Despite the positive visits to Blacksburg and South Bend, Blanton does not name any favorites at this point in his decision-making process. He does not want to take too long to make a decision, though.
“Not right now,” Blanton replied when asked if he had any favorites. “I’m going to try to pull those out this summer. I’m going to visit a lot of schools this summer to try and get a real feel for them.
“I’m probably going to commit somewhere before the season starts.”
In the meantime, Blanton is focused on schoolwork and preparing for his senior season. As a junior this past season, he racked up 147 tackles and made seven interceptions. He is projected likely as a corner on the next level, although some schools have mentioned safety as well.
