For the
uninitiated, TSL created a purely numerical system for rating past recruiting
classes, and over time, it has been applied VT football recruiting classes from
1990 to the present (it requires that a class go through its redshirt-senior
year before it can be fully evaluated). The rating system is explained in this
article, and there are links that go into more detail. At the end of this
article, a link is provided to an Excel file with the data that was used.


In our last article in this series, the 1998 recruiting class was by far the
most productive class that we’ve rated. There was a lot of star power in that
class, including Michael Vick and Lee Suggs, and a total of five All-Americans.
Tech followed that up with the 1999 recruiting class, and it also contains a lot
of names that Tech fans recognize. But were they as productive as the 1998
class, or most of the classes before them? The answer is surprising.

There were some very good football players in the 1999
recruiting class
, but no truly great player. The Hokies seemed to focus
on the offensive and defensive lines in the 1999 class, with mixed results.
