Marcus Davis ‘ recruitment is picking up week by week, as the Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) junior recently tripled his scholarship offer total. This could just be the beginning of bigger things to come for Davis, a gifted physical talent.
With Clemson and Virginia coming through earlier this week, the 6-5, 215-pound Davis is now up to three scholarship offers. He landed his first last month.
“I wasn’t sure it would come, but when I got it I was very excited,” Davis said of his first offer, which was from Virginia Tech.
“I’m very excited about everything right now. I’m also just trying to have a great senior season and show these fellas out at the beach that Ocean Lakes is for real.”
A do-everything player for Ocean Lakes, Davis accounted for 680 yards rushing and over 500 yards passing last season as a junior. He added 28 receptions. He may be the primary quarterback in 2007, as his versatility may be tough to keep from under center.
Davis’ versatility is intriguing to college coaches. Virginia likes him right now as either an h-back or an outside linebacker. Virginia Tech is recruiting Davis simply as an athlete.
“I’m not too big on any one position,” Davis said. “I just want to play.”
Davis does not expect to make a college decision until after his senior season. Right now, he says, “I’m open” to all schools. He does have a slight preference in-state, though.
“If I had a choice, I’d probably choose Virginia Tech,” Davis said. “It’s nothing against UVa, it’s just that I grew up watching Virginia Tech. I like Mike Vick.”
Davis put his physical ability on display at yesterday’s Virginia Beach combine, running the 40-yard dash in the 4.4s (hand-timed) and benching 185 pounds 20 times. He will be on display for colleges coaches next month at the Virginia Beach skills camp, so don’t be surprised if more and more offers continue to come in the near future.
Virginia Beach combine notes…
Davis looks extremely well put-together. He is truly an impressive physical specimen, part of the reason why I think his recruitment could increase very soon.
Landstown’s Xavier Boyce is also very impressive physically. Both players certainly look to be their given heights...
