At yesterday’s Virginia Beach combine, First Colonial (Virginia Beach, VA) junior Tony Gregory showed why he has earned a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech. The 5-11, 185-pound running back recruit performed very well in the 40-yard dash, displaying the speed that enabled him to average 7 yards per carry and 31 yards per kick-return last season as a junior.

Yesterday, Gregory was hand-timed at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also turned in a solid time of 4.39 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle and posted a 33-inch vertical leap.

“I could have done way better in the shuttle,” Gregory said of his performance yesterday. “I think I could have done better in the 40, too.”

Gregory’s performance was not surprising, especially considering what he has done in track this spring. Just recently, he ran an electronically timed 10.9 seconds in the 100 meters. In a meet at Landstown, he was hand-timed at 10.62 seconds in the 100.

Virginia Tech coaches certainly noticed his speed on film and Tech was the first school to officially offer Gregory, who added another offer recently and could add more in the coming weeks.

“I got an offer from Northern Illinios,” Gregory said. “North Carolina State is talking about offering, but I guess it’s going to take time. I went up there for the spring game. Coach O’Brien is a nice guy. He’s easy to talk to. The campus is big.”

This weekend, Gregory will head to the University of Maryland for its spring game. After that, no more visits are scheduled until the summer.

“During the summer, I’m going to hit some camps,” Gregory said.

Virginia Tech, one of the schools Gregory will likely visit for camp, remains in solid shape. Gregory named a top three of Virginia Tech, Maryland and Tennessee in our previous interview.

“I haven’t heard from them lately, but they have been in contact with my coach,” Gregory said of the Virginia Tech staff.

“Virginia Tech is still high on my list.”
