6-1, 195-pound Kathleen Senior (Lakeland, FL) wide receiver/defensive back T.J. Lawrence claims eight written offers at this point in his recruitment. Virginia Tech is one of the eight schools and is one of three programs that Lawrence has visited.

Asked which schools had extended written offers, Lawrence answered, “Virginia Tech, Boise State, LSU, Clemson, U-Conn, Ole Miss, Michigan State and Arizona State.”

Accompanied by three other Lakeland area junior standouts, Lawrence visited Blacksburg several weeks ago. He enjoyed his first-ever experience in Blacksburg.

“It is a beautiful campus,” Lawrence said of Virginia Tech. “They have a real nice football facility. The campus is just so big. You have to have a moped to go from class to class (laughs). Overall, it was good.”

Lawrence spoke with several Virginia Tech coaches on the visit, including primary recruiter Torrian Gray and head coach Frank Beamer. Gray is an alumni of Kathleen Senior High School.

“I feel real comfortable talking to him,” Lawrence said of Coach Gray. “He is pretty cool.

“I met a lot of the coaches [while on the visit]. It was pretty cool meeting Coach Beamer. He didn’t say much, but it was cool meeting him.”

As a junior this past season, Lawrence earned Class 3A first-team all-state honors at wide receiver. He had 70 receptions for 1,245 yards and 13 touchdowns on offense. A safety on defense, he tallied five interceptions.

Lawrence plays wide receiver, defensive back, kick returner, punt returner and punter for Kathleen. He says schools are divided between recruiting him as a wide receiver and recruiting him as a defensive back. Virginia Tech likes him at defensive back, he says.

“I like wide receiver because I’m dangerous with the ball in my hands,” Lawrence said. “Coaches say they like my overall athleticism out there. This off-season, I’m trying to improve my hands and my speed.”

At this point, Lawrence, who has also visited Florida (for a Nike camp) and Ole Miss, did not tip his hand to any potential favorites.

“I’m going to take all five of my visits, but I don’t know which schools I want to visit just yet,” Lawrence said. He may make unofficial visits to Clemson
