Smithfield (VA) star WR/ATH Dyrell Roberts has three scholarship offers in the fold – East Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, N.C. State and Vanderbilt are some of the schools showing very strong interest. The 6-2, 190-pound prospect plans to make several visits in the coming weeks, with the visits coming to two of the programs that have offered.

Roberts will visit Virginia and Virginia Tech. He has already visited UVa on three occasions and will be visiting Virginia Tech for the first time.

“On the 14th, I’m going to UVa,” Roberts said. “On the 21st, I’m going to Virginia Tech. Florida wanted me to come down on the 14th, but I had already told Virginia I was going there.

“[The visits] are going to be fun. I’m going to meet the teams and see what they’re all about.”

The in-state schools, along with Florida, are currently highest on Roberts’ list.

“Virginia Tech, UVa and Florida,” Roberts replied when asked if he had any favorites.

“I don’t have a clear favorite. Right now, I just like all of them. I like the programs.”

In his junior season, Roberts rushed for over 1,000 yards on 118 carries. He added 22 receptions and scored 14 total touchdowns. A star on defense as well, he tallied eight interceptions and earned AP AA second-team all-state honors at defensive back.

Though he is being recruited primarily as a wide receiver, Roberts will be Smithfield’s primary running back next season. It is an opportunity he is anxiously awaiting.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time,” Roberts said. “It should be fun. Plus, we’re going to have a good squad.”

Roberts just began outdoor track season, but he is not focused on track. He is focusing on hitting the weight room to prepare for his senior season. What would also help him focus on his senior season is if he makes a college decision before it begins.

“I’m trying to have a decision before my senior season,” Roberts said. “I want to have my mind made up by August.”
