Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach Seth Greenberg added another prospect to Tech’s 2007 recruiting class today, when the program received a verbal commitment from 6-6, 215-pound Massanutten Military Academy guard Darrion Pellum .
Pellum chose Virginia Tech over offers from Miami, LaSalle, Providence and UNC-Wilmington.
“Virginia Tech came in with an offer about a month ago, but they have been recruiting Darrion since last year,” Massanutten Military postgraduate basketball coach Richard Moore said. “At that time, he didn’t have what he needed on the SAT. He has since passed the SAT and his grades are getting much better, so everything is getting on target for him to be eligible to play Division 1 basketball. Once Virginia Tech found that out, they said they wanted to sign him.
“Out of all the other schools recruiting him, Virginia Tech was the best choice.”
Pellum, who reclassified and is repeating his senior year this year, averaged about 20 points and eight rebounds per game according to coach Moore. He shot over 40-percent from 3-point range and over 70-percent from the free throw line.
The versatile standout saw time at the one, two, three and four positions this season.
“Virginia Tech is actually recruiting him to play combo guard,” Moore said. “He can handle the ball and he can shoot it. He is so talented that we put him where we needed him the most. We played him some at the point. A lot of people didn’t know he could handle the point, but he showed he could under pressure.”
Playing in the ACC will be a dream come true for Pellum.
“He is very excited,” Moore said. “I told him – ‘you wanted to play with the best, so now you are going to play with the best.’ I feel he needs a challenge and he’s going to get challenged everyday.”
