6-6, 315-pound offensive/defensive lineman Vinston Painter has become one of the most highly recruited juniors in the country. With close to 40 scholarship offers in the fold, the Maury (Norfolk, VA) star seems to be doing a good job of taking all of the attention he’s receiving in stride.

“I’m just enjoying it right now,” Painter said. “I’m just laying back, watching everything happen.”

Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Notre Dame, Penn State, Oklahoma, Virginia and Virginia Tech are among the programs that have officially offered. Painter has been in contact with coaches from all these programs and more, including Virginia Tech’s Curt Newsome and Virginia’s Mike London.

While coaches are currently trying to position their schools to be seriously in contention, Painter is not in any rush to make a decision and plans to take his time in the recruiting process.

“I’ll probably take all of my official visits next year during my senior season,” Painter said. “It won’t be a last minute commitment, but it’ll be a while.”

At last check, Virginia Tech was Painter’s favorite. This remains the case.

“I’m still looking at Virginia Tech, but probably the other choices would be Florida and Oklahoma…that is probably my top three,” Painter said.

Painter has visited Virginia Tech before and is currently on a visit to Florida. He discussed why the Gators are in his top three.

“They just won the National Championship,” Painter replied when asked why he listed Florida in his top three. His coaches were previously scheduled to go to Gainesville this week, so he decided to go along with them for a visit. “They already have players from Virginia, like Percy Harvin. He is somebody from home who can tell me how things go. I’ve been talking to the coaches lately and they are pretty good guys.”

A first-team all-state selection at offensive line, Painter is actually being recruited by some teams for defense. Most schools either like him as an offensive lineman or offensive lineman/defensive lineman recruit.

“Either or,” Painter replied when asked if he had a position preference.
