A strong, physical wide receiver/safety for Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA), 6-0, 200-pound Kerry Boykins is also a big-time playmaker. An all-district, all-Tidewater and all-state performer (first-team VHSCA kick-returner, second-team wide receiver) last season as a junior, Boykins had 37 receptions for 760 yards and five touchdowns and had five punt or kick returns of over 60 yards.
It is his dynamic playmaking ability that has college coaches anxious to land his services. Right now, he has been offered by Connecticut, ECU, Maryland, UNC, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
“I’m real proud of myself and my family is proud of me, but I’m not going to let offers or rankings get to my head,” Boykins said. “I always know there is someone better than me out there and that makes me work harder.”
Boykins admits he wasn’t a dynamic player for the junior varsity squad his freshman year. Admittedly only a “solid player” that season, he did make one memorable play late in the season…a play that may have been a signal of his success to come.
“The last game of the season my freshman year, I caught a one-handed interception and almost returned it for a touchdown,” Boykins reflected. “I tried out for varsity the next year and ever since I have started for the varsity at wide receiver and safety. I sometimes line up in the backfield, too.”
On the next level, Boykins says he would prefer to play offense but admits “I like to hit on defense.” Most schools are recruiting him as a receiver in the early going.
Boykins has only visited one of the schools that has offered, and that is the University of Maryland. He will return there on Sunday.
“I’m open to all schools,” Boykins said. “Right now, the school I like the most is Maryland but that is because they are the only school I’ve visited. I really liked it, though. I don’t know about other schools right now. I went to Maryland during football season to see them play versus Miami. Me, Jamar [Wilson] and Todd [Harrelson] are going back on Sunday [for a junior day].”
