For the second time, Jay Smith did not make a previously scheduled official visit to Virginia Tech. The Hokies continue to be prime competitors for TSL’s number three overall recruit in the state, however, and a decision could come in the near future.
“The key to the trip was my wife,” said Jay’s father, Mordecai Smith. “She wants to be there. She wants to meet with Coach Beamer to discuss some things.”
Jay, a 6-3, 200-pound wide receiver out of Lake Taylor High School (Norfolk, VA), likes four schools at this point in his decision making process.
“Everything’s still the same,” Mordecai said. “Jay definitely likes Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Miami. I don’t want to leave out Tennessee, either. There are some issues at Miami and at Tech that my wife is concerned with. That’s why she wants to meet with Coach Beamer and, if we visit Miami, she wants to meet with Coach Coker.”
Mr. Smith revealed the two schools at the top of his son’s list right now.
“Being brutally candid, I think Virginia Tech and N.C. State are probably Jay’s favorites,” Mordecai said. “I think Tennessee and Miami come in after those two. The thing is, anything can sway this. My wife and I would support any decision.”
When could a decision come?
“Honestly, I think that Jay will know in the next two weeks,” Mordecai said. “That’s just my gut feeling. At that point, I think he will look to us for the go ahead. In my gut, I feel that could happen soon.”
The Smiths do hope to visit Blacksburg soon in an unofficial capacity. They plan to visit N.C. State next Saturday for the Georgia Tech game and may get out to Miami, where they have family, sometime soon.
If Smith comes to a decision in the coming two weeks, he would likely have a press conference to announce it.
