Recruiting Notes: Another Prospect from Varina?

Varina High School is certainly a target for the Virginia Tech coaching staff in almost every recruiting class. That’s especially the case this year, as the staff has targeted three recruits — DB Davon Morgan, DE/LB Jamar Jackson and DT Bud Tribbey — with another potentially on the horizon.

According to Varina Offensive Coordinator Blanda Wolfe, the Tech staff is supposed to meet tomorrow to discuss the status of senior outside linebacker Marell Evans. Evans, 6-3, 215-pound prospect, just received an offer from the University of Michigan.

“Beforehand, he had interest from a lot of smaller programs like Buffalo and other schools in the MAC,” Wolfe said of Evans. “West Virginia, N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Michigan have got on him of late. They’ve been calling him and things like that. Coach Carr talked to him [yesterday] to say they are officially offering. He’s going up there for a visit soon. Virginia Tech is meeting on him on Friday.”

An all-district and all-region standout last season, Evans played at around 200 pounds. He was an effective player who used his speed and quickness to make big plays for the Blue Devil defense. He has added some weight for this season and his play has gotten even better.
