Varina High School is certainly a target for the Virginia Tech coaching staff in almost every recruiting class. That’s especially the case this year, as the staff has targeted three recruits — DB Davon Morgan, DE/LB Jamar Jackson and DT Bud Tribbey — with another potentially on the horizon.

According to Varina Offensive Coordinator Blanda Wolfe, the Tech staff is supposed to meet tomorrow to discuss the status of senior outside linebacker Marell Evans. Evans, 6-3, 215-pound prospect, just received an offer from the University of Michigan.

“Beforehand, he had interest from a lot of smaller programs like Buffalo and other schools in the MAC,” Wolfe said of Evans. “West Virginia, N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Michigan have got on him of late. They’ve been calling him and things like that. Coach Carr talked to him [yesterday] to say they are officially offering. He’s going up there for a visit soon. Virginia Tech is meeting on him on Friday.”

An all-district and all-region standout last season, Evans played at around 200 pounds. He was an effective player who used his speed and quickness to make big plays for the Blue Devil defense. He has added some weight for this season and his play has gotten even better.

“Everybody sees his upside,” Wolfe explained. “He’s real long. He’s probably got some of the best hips of anybody. A lot of opposing coaches will tell us after games that he has some of the best hips they’ve seen. And he’s all over the place on the field this season. He’s really come on lately.”

With Virginia Tech’s limited scholarship numbers, will the Hokies have to offer Evans as a grey-shirt candidate?

“They’ve talked about grey-shirting him and they’ve talked about him coming in on a regular timetable and red-shirting,” Wolfe said. “I guess they’ll talk about it more on Friday.”

Does Evans have any favorites?

“I know he’s going to take one of his visits to Michigan,” Wolfe said. “That is one of his favorite places. He and Brandon Minor are really, really close. But he hasn’t made any decisions or anything. I just think he’ll definitely take a visit to Michigan and
