Barquell Rivers , a 6-0, 200-pound linebacker prospect out of Anson County High School (N.C.), is expected to make a verbal commitment this evening according to head coach Jody Grooms. Virginia Tech is among the finalists.
“He’s going to make a decision this afternoon,” Grooms said. “He’s notifying the schools in the evening. He’s not going to have a press conference or anything. He says that, if anything, he’ll just announce to his team before practice and be done with it.”
Asked if there are any finalists, Grooms replied “He keeps mentioning Virginia Tech, N.C. State, UNC and Clemson. He has visited all of the schools he’s most interested in, so I think he’ll be pretty solid in his decision. He’s going to be educated on why he chose the school he chooses.”
Virginia Tech has been led by recruiting coach Kevin Sherman.
“Coach Sherman has done a great job,” Grooms noted. Virginia Tech is recruiting Rivers for the Mike position. “Barquell spoke with him last night.”
Rivers will be a four-year starter on the varsity level. He started as a freshman. As a junior last season, Rivers made 130 tackles and had three interceptions. He earned all-state honors at the linebacker position. He was named all-conference his sophomore and junior seasons.
A terrific all around athlete, Rivers plays basketball and baseball in addition to football.
