Running back is considered a big position of need for the 2007 Virginia Tech recruiting class. Early Saturday afternoon the Hokies received a verbal commitment from one of the top targets on their board at running back, Garner (NC) star Josh Oglesby. With Oglesby’s commitment, Virginia Tech has secured a quality runner, and a quality person as well.
The Tech coaches let it be known that playing time would be available at the tailback position.
“I know they only signed one back last year, and he is a fullback,” Oglesby said. “Also, I looked at some of the offensive linemen that they have signed, like last year I think they signed the #6 tackle in the country [Aaron Brown]. They got three big linemen last year.”
Josh also seemed very excited when he heard the news than William Alvarez committed to the Hokies this morning. But playing time and offensive linemen wasn’t the only reason Oglesby chose Virginia Tech.
“Virginia Tech reminded me of the area around my high school,” Oglesby said. “It’s a small town that really gets excited about football.”
“With Coach Beamer, I like his coaching style. I know he’s been there for awhile and he’s not going anywhere. Coach Hite, I like his reputation with running backs. They rush for a lot of yards and get a chance in the NFL.”
After the conversation with Oglesby, it’s clear that he likes running backs coach Billy Hite very much. But is he solid to Virginia Tech? Will he take other visits?
“I feel very confident about my decision,” Oglesby said. “I do have a teammate, Chris Culliver, who will probably want me to go on visits with him, but I’ll definitely be in his ear about Virginia Tech.”
