Back in February, Virginia Tech became the first school to officially offer 6-3, 296-pound offensive guard recruit Jaymes Brooks. More big time programs have followed suit since. During the recent combine at Christopher Newport University, the Denbigh (Newport News, VA) standout gave an indication why he is so heavily recruited.

“He performed fairly well,” Denbigh head coach Tracy Harrod said of Brooks at the CNU combine. “He ran very well. He ran a 4.93 at 296 pounds. He ran some pretty good times in the shuttle also. He didn’t lift at all. He really just went there to run and he ran pretty well.”

Brooks mans one of the offensive guard spots for coach Harrod. He plays defensive end on occasion and even saw time at middle linebacker his sophomore season, but offensive guard is his primary position (especially last season, as Jaymes played through a shoulder injury) and the position schools are recruiting him to play.

“I think his footwork and his ability to move around the field is what has attracted many college coaches to him,” Harrod said. “He is a very powerful, explosive kid, but I think his footwork has attracted the most attention. We run the wing-T offense and he does all of our pulling. He’s a big guy who has really good feet and moves around really well.”

Coach Harrod plans to increase Brooks’ time on defense next season but says his standout will continue to see more time on offense. Tennessee is one program that likes him initially on offense but has not ruled out giving him a look on defense.

Tech likes Brooks as an offensive guard or perhaps a center.

“He has official offers from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina State, Tennessee, South Carolina and, within the next couple of days, the Florida Gators are going to officially offer him,” Harrod said. “I talked to the Florida coaches and they said they were going to offer him within the next few days.”

When Brooks received his offer from Virginia Tech, he was very pleased.

“I was so happy when I found out Virginia Tech was offering me,” Brooks said. “It’s been my dream to go to Virginia Tech.”

Brooks has been to Virginia Tech on three occasions including twice for track meets.

“I had visited Virginia Tech my 10th grade year with my
