For the second straight year, Virginia Tech has gone into the state of Georgia and come out with a fine looking defensive back prospect. Today, Mario Edwards , a talented recruit out of Westlake (Atlanta, GA), verbally committed to the Hokies.
“I committed to Virginia Tech today,” said Edwards, who becomes the 16th player to commit for the 2006 recruiting class. “On Tuesday, I decided I would commit today. Coach Beamer is supposed to be coming by in a few weeks, but I didn’t want to wait until then because they might not have any more room.
“I called Coach [Lorenzo] Ward today. He was excited (laughs). He was like ‘don’t play with me.’ I told him I wasn’t playing and that I was committing.”
Edwards, who has listed Virginia Tech as his favorite school since the summer of 2005, made an official visit to Central Florida last weekend. While he enjoyed the trip, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hokies.
“I’d say my relationship with Coach Ward was very important,” said Edwards, who talks to Coach Ward on a weekly basis. “It was important to have my position coach be the one recruiting me.”
Edwards made an official visit to Tech on the weekend of November 4th and plans to head back to Blacksburg in the coming weeks for an unofficial visit with his parents. A very solid addition, the Westlake star is versatile and says “Coach Ward said to be ready for any position they need me to play in the defensive backfield.”
Last weekend, Edwards was measured and weighed and came out at 6-2, 192 pounds. He has been timed at 4.6 flat in the 40-yard dash.
