Westlake (Atlanta, GA) defensive back Mario Edwards has narrowed his list to two schools, but is not sure when a final decision could come. The 6-1, 180-pound prospect will take an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech before making a commitment.
This past weekend, Edwards took an official visit to Central Florida and came away impressed.
“I’d give it about a 9,” Edwards said of his Central Florida trip. “It was good. It’s in a nice city (Orlando). They had the best facilities I’ve seen so far. The coach was cool. Coach O’Leary knows a lot about football. The team got along with each other.”
What does Edwards think of Central Florida’s program?
“I’d say they have a good program,” Edwards said. “It’s going to improve over the years. From what I understand, they will be fighting for the [Conference USA] championship year in and year out.”
Edwards, who is being recruited as a defensive back by both finalists, has one more visit remaining before he will make a decision.
“My last visit is going to be to Virginia Tech,” said Edwards. “It’s either going to be next weekend or the final weekend in January. I’m going with my parents to see more of the place. I went on an official visit for the Miami game, but I didn’t really get to see much of the school. I want to see the facilities, the main academic areas and the dorms. I just want to see more of the environment and see if I like it.”
Tech still holds the lead, although Edwards admits that the Central Florida visit gave him some more to think about.
“It’s pretty much down to those two,” Edwards said. “Central Florida made a push with the visit, but I’d still say Virginia Tech has the lead.”
We’ll follow up with Mario next week to see when he plans to make his all-important second trip to Virginia Tech.
