Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) 4-star defensive end recruit Brian Whitmore made a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland following an official visit last month. In an interview last night, it appears the 6-4, 250-pound standout is interested in taking a look at at least two other programs before he signs in February.
“I think I committed too early,” Whitmore said candidly. “I’m starting to wish I hadn’t done that so early.”
Virginia Tech and South Carolina will receive official visits this month.
“I want to see what Virginia Tech’s all about,” Whitmore said. “I want to check out South Carolina. I like what both of them have been saying to me. I could still end up at Maryland, but I want to check out those other schools first.”
Whitmore followed up an excellent junior season with a terrific senior campaign. A defensive end and offensive tackle, he led Oscar Smith to an undefeated regular season and a second consecutive Southeastern District championship. He recently earned first-team AAA all-state honors for his senior year performance.
Though his team fell short in its state championship hopes, he is still proud of what he accomplished.
“It wasn’t a perfect season because we fell short of what we wanted to accomplish, but I’m happy with my high school career,” Whitmore said. “I have a lot to be proud of. That’s how I’m looking at it.”
Whitmore is being recruited by all three schools as a defensive end. He will make official visits to Virginia Tech and South Carolina, but he isn’t sure of the exact dates. Look for a final decision to come around signing day in February.
