Westlake (Atlanta, GA) star defensive back Mario Edwards made an official visit to Blacksburg on the weekend of November 4th, but will make a return trip in January. His parents weren’t able to make the official visit, a big reason why the 6-1, 180-pound prospect is heading to Virginia Tech once again next month.
“I’m going to Virginia Tech with my parents on the weekend of January 20th,” Edwards said. “They didn’t come with me when I took my official visit.”
In addition to the visit to Virginia Tech, Edwards plans on making an official visit to Central Florida on the weekend of January 6th and says he “probably will take an official visit to Baylor.”
Right now, Virginia Tech continues to hold the edge.
“They are the favorite,” Edwards said of the Hokies. “Central Florida and Georgia Tech (only a verbal offer, with not much contact recently) are right behind them.”
A big reason why Virginia Tech continues to be the favorite is the work of Lorenzo Ward, who is the primary recruiter here. Ward has developed an excellent relationship with Edwards, who receives a call at least once a week from the Tech assistant.
“He called during Christmas,” Edwards said of Ward. Schools are allowed one weekly phone call to each recruit during the dead period. “I have a real close relationship with him. I’m probably the closest with him than I am with any other coach.”
Central Florida has crept into the top list and he is looking forward to his official visit next weekend.
“I’ve spoken with [Head] Coach [George] O’Leary one time and he seemed like a good guy,” Edwards said. “They have an up-and-coming program.”
Grey shirt possibility?
Has Virginia Tech discussed the possibility of enrolling in January of 2007 with Edwards?
“No,” Edwards replied. “They haven’t said that they want me to enroll in January [of 2007].”
