Southeast (Oklahoma City, OK) defensive tackle Gerald McCoy , rated one of the country’s top prospects, made his way to Blacksburg last weekend for an official visit. Techsideline.com caught up with the 6-4, 285-pound standout who has two official visits remaining before a possible commitment.
“It was cool,” McCoy said of his official visit to Virginia Tech. “I think [the school environment] was a little slower than I thought it would be, but the team was cool and the coaches were nice. They have a special game atmosphere and the coaches know the game.”
McCoy was hosted by senior defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis and the two really hit it off.
“He was a cool dude,” McCoy said of Lewis. “We didn’t even talk about football that much. He just talked to me about being in school and what he did when he was being recruited. It was real cool.”
McCoy, who chose not compare his first three official visits (Notre Dame, USC, Virginia Tech) and named no favorites, has set his final two official visits to LSU and Miami, respectively. He will head to LSU on the weekend of December 9th and Miami on the weekend of December 16th.
In addition to the five schools he will have officially visited, McCoy is also heavily considering Oklahoma. Asked when he may have a decision, he said “whenever I’m ready to decide, I’ll decide.”
He went over what the most important factors will be in his final decision.
“The playing environment as far as the players and the town,” McCoy said. “Another thing will be if the coaches treat me just like any other player. I want coaches who will help me develop into a man and show me the ropes. The academic part is important, too.”
