Springfield South (Springfield, OH) offensive tackle Lee Tilley has narrowed his list of schools from his many, many Division 1A scholarship offers. Several SEC programs made the initial cut for the 6-7, 297-pound star.
“It’s down to like 12 or 13 – Clemson, Florida Gators, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, Syracuse, Arizona State, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Cincinnati, Washington and N.C. State,” Tilley said.
Tilley will make unofficial visits very soon – later this month, in fact – and will try to see a majority of the schools in contention. He claims no favorites right now.
“I trying to look at all of them,” Tilley said. “That’s my list right now. I’m trying to take a trip down South from about the 20th thru the 29th. I figured, if I can see a lot of them on one trip and come back home, I might as well do that. Then I want to take three official visits – to Arizona State, to Oklahoma and to Washington.
“If I see all those schools and I don’t like any of ‘em, I’ll take a look at somewhere else. If I can’t make a decision on these schools – I mean, they all have the same things in common. They have good coaches, they all win and they’ll all compete for National Championships. If push comes to shove, I’m going to be playing for a great team with great coaches.”
Trust and comfort level with the coaches are very important factors for Tilley.
“I want to see if the coaches are coaches I feel will be honest with me,” Tilley said. “To be honest with you, this recruiting thing doesn’t really impress me because everyone tells me the same thing. They all tell me how good I am and things like that. I’d rather have a coach tell me that they want me on their team but they aren’t going to bend over backwards to get me and just leave it at that. I want them to be real with me and I’ll be real with them. I want a situation where I know what I’m walking into.”
Virginia Tech has made the cut and Tilley says he wants to visit during his southern swing. How did his interest in Virginia Tech begin?
“My cousin is a real big Virginia Tech fan,” Tilley said. “They’d send me some pieces of mail once in a while. Then the coach came in and I showed him to my coach’s office or whatever. Then, after he left, my coach told me that they had offered.
“Virginia Tech’s one of my top schools because they win their conference almost every year.”
