Virginia Tech landed commitment #13 this evening, when Newnan High School (GA) star Sergio Render chose the Hokies over Arkansas, Florida State and Mississippi. A 6-4, 290-pound defensive tackle recruit, Render gives a boost to a position of need in the 2005 recruiting class.
“I am committing to Virginia Tech,” Render said. “Coach [Lorenzo] Ward came by my house tonight and that’s when I told him. He was happy.”
Render’s official visit to Virginia Tech earlier this year is what boosted the Hokies in this recruiting race. He never visited any other schools and will not take any other official visits.
“Yes sir,” Render replied when asked if the official visit put Virginia Tech over the top for his services. “And I really like the coaching staff, the players and the country area up there.”
Render says he is “straight” when asked if he is qualified academically. He originally committed to Florida State earlier this year before re-opening his recruiting process.
