Douglass (Atlanta, GA) star James Davis, who is one of the top tailback recruits in the country, made his official visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend. Virginia Tech joined Tennessee as one of Davis’ top 2 schools before the weekend, and the visit appeared to really help the Hokies solidify and even enhance their position.

“I loved my visit to Virginia Tech this weekend,” Davis said. “They are at the very top of my list right now. They’re my top school. I’m probably going to go there but I want to take my visit to Tennessee first to see them. I really liked it up there though. I was very close to committing.”

Virginia Tech’s football game atmosphere was what really stood out to the 6-0, 205-pound blue-chipper.

“I loved the walk,” Davis said. “When we went up there for the walk, fans were calling my name and that made a big impression on me. One fan had a sign saying ‘James Davis come here’. I was shocked. I was thinking that this is a place I’d want to be.

“[During the game] I loved the crowd. They were very loud. I liked it a lot.”

Davis also enjoyed spending time with former and current players.

“I was hosted by Mike Parham, but Bryan Randall and Kevin Jones were all around me too,” Davis said. “That excited me even more. And I liked the young receivers that they’ve got there. With Marcus Vick coming back next year, they should have a great offense.”

What did Davis think of Coach Beamer?

“I liked him a whole lot,” Davis said. “He invited me to his house and I met with him and Coach Ward. They were talking to me about me coming there. They said when I get there they’d want me to get early playing time. They’d want me to play my first year to get some experience.”

Davis had a visit to Clemson scheduled in the month of December, but has had to reschedule it to take standardized tests. He says he will likely make official visits to Alabama and Mississippi State as well, but adds “they wouldn’t change anything in my decision. It’s really down to Virginia Tech and Tennessee.”

Davis makes his official visit to Tennessee on the weekend of January 21st. He says he will likely decide soon after on the Countdown to Signing Day show.
