LaGrange (GA) linebacker/defensive end prospect Braxton Kelley has set his 2nd official visit – it will be to Virginia Tech on the weekend of December 10th. Kelley, whose first official visit was to the University of Kentucky, is also seriously considering South Carolina but has not set an official visit with them.
All 3 schools have offered official scholarships to Kelley, who says he is “open” to other schools as well. Ole Miss, Florida and Auburn are recruiting him but have not offered.
The 6-1, 220-pound standout stated what he likes about the 3 most serious contenders right now.
“I liked the atmosphere up there,” Kelley said of Kentucky. “I liked the city. It’s a place that offers a good education. I liked that I’d have a chance at playing early. They played a lot of freshman early this year and they’ll do the same next year.
“Virginia Tech always has a top program. They are always in the top 5 or 10 at the beginning of the year. They have a good coach. I’ve never visited there. I want to know what it’s like. I’ve heard it’s cold up there in Virginia (laughs).
“South Carolina has a good program. All around, they have a pretty good program. Even though Coach Holtz is leaving, he started something good. He laid a good foundation for the future. Their defensive coordinator is pretty cool.”
Kelley is not sure when he may have a decision. Right now, he says he is “trying to focus on the rest of our season.”
A tough, quick defensive end, Kelley has tallied 67 tackles, 45 assists, with 9 sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss in 2004. He is tied for the team lead in tackles-for-loss. On the next level, he says teams are recruiting him as a defensive end/linebacker.
“I’d probably like to play linebacker,” Kelley said. “Teams are recruiting me for both [linebacker and defensive end].”
LaGrange advanced to the state semifinals with a 17-3 win last weekend over Carrollton. They take on M.L. King High School this Saturday in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA.
