Virginia Tech’s latest commitment is for one of the team’s biggest needs in the 2005 recruiting class. Yesterday, Virginia Tech landed a verbal commitment from talented and productive Phoebus (Hampton, VA) defensive end Steven Friday .
“Yes I have,” Friday replied when asked if he had committed to Virginia Tech. “Location was a factor. And I just liked how I felt when I visited. I felt comfortable and I liked it a lot. The coaching staff is also a lot like the one I have now.”
Friday, a 6-5, 215-pound prospect, is one of the key components for Phoebus’ defense. Aggressive and athletic, he tallied 27 tackles-for-loss and had 17 sacks last season as a junior. He earned Group AAA coaches first-team all-state honors for his performance last year.
Friday missed the first 2 games of this season with a knee bruise, but returned in fine fashion for last week’s 48-0 destruction of Denbigh.
“I had 2 sacks, and there were fumbles on both of those tackles,” Friday said.
Tech’s need for defensive ends was another reason Friday liked the Hokies. He says Tech is getting a “physical and speedy” defensive end prospect.
Friday is rated the #13 overall prospect in the state by Techsideline.com and the #21 overall prospect by the Roanoke Times. He is considered a 3-star prospect.
