Four-star tailback Mikell Simpson was looking forward to the month of September, to have the chance to talk to college coaches and subsequently narrow his list of 11 schools.
So far, he hasn’t been able to narrow his list among Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Carolina, West Virginia, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Ohio State, Virginia, UCLA and Alabama.
“Not right now,” Simpson replied, asked if he had narrowed his list since the late August update. “I’m still trying to get a better feel for coaches so I can narrow it down to 5 by the end of next month. My top 5 will be the 5 official visits I take.”
There is one bit of new news however. UCLA is the first school to have scheduled an official visit with Simpson. They are the first to make his top 5.
“I’ve scheduled a visit to UCLA from December 3rd thru December 5th,” Simpson said. “That’s the weekend they play USC. It’s going to be my first time out West, so I’m anxious to see what it’s like.”
As for Virginia, the coaches have been in contact with Simpson this month.
“I’ve talked to Virginia a couple of times,” Simpson said. “I’ve talked to Coach Dex, Coach Price and Coach [Al] Groh. They are basically saying what the opportunity is there. A top running back coming has a good chance to compete for early playing time. They need a good back in this year’s class.”
Is Virginia in good shape to land in the top 5?
“Virginia is really high on my list,” Simpson said. “You can’t overlook the fact that they play in the ACC. They might have an opening to fill the role at running back. I saw that Elan Lewis committed to Virginia Tech, so that might help Virginia a little bit.”
Before the beginning of September, Simpson had named UCLA, Virginia and Nebraska as schools that had the lead because they were recruiting the hardest. He has spoken with Nebraska this month as well.
“I’ve talked to Nebraska once, but it was nothing serious,” Simpson said. “They were just asking how I was playing and telling me good luck. They didn’t talk about recruiting details, but maybe the next time I talk to them they will.”
Are there any teams Simpson feels are recruiting him the hardest now?
“I’d say UCLA, Virginia, Alabama’s been coming on strong recently and Nebraska,” Simpson said.
It appears UVa is in good shape to land in the top 5, but they need to close the deal on an official visit. It will be interesting...
