According to Paterson Catholic (Paterson, NJ) Head Coach Benjie Wimberly, star safety prospect Kitt Pommells will likely take official visits before making a decision. Pommells had earlier expressed an interest in deciding before the start of his senior season.
“He wants to take all 5 now,” Wimberly said.
Virginia, which has been at or near the top of Pommells’ list for quite some time, will likely be one of the schools to get a visit. Other than one other school, Wimberly is not sure where the other visits will be.
“I don’t know all of the schools he’ll visit, but I know Virginia will be one,” Wimberly said. “He really likes UVa. My second guess is that Maryland would be another definite. The other 3 are up in the air right now.”
Virginia, which has 21 commitments for the 2005 class, still appears to be recruiting Pommells.
“I know they have quite a few players that have committed,” Wimberly said of UVa. “They even have a few New Jersey guys that have committed. I’ve talked to the coaches, and they haven’t said that they are not recruiting any more defensive backs. We haven’t heard anything like that. I haven’t gotten that call.”
Wimberly believes Pommells will have to make official visits following the season. Paterson Catholic plays all of their games on Saturdays, and they don’t have a bye week.
Wimberly is excited about his team this year…especially Pommells, who he has looked excellent in several preseason scrimmages.
“Physically, he’s up to 205 pounds,” Wimberly said of Pommells. “He’s put together. We’ve had 2 scrimmages, and without doubt, he’s been the most dominant player on the field on either side.”
Pommells will play wide receiver, safety and even some tailback this season. He is one of the top defensive back prospects in the state of New Jersey.
