A new team has emerged in Jackson High School (MI) star Antonio Bass’ list of top schools. Notre Dame is now among the favorites following an unofficial visit from Bass about 3 weeks ago.

“He had a good visit to Notre Dame,” Jackson Head Coach Jack Fairly said. “He liked the facilities. He liked the coaching staff and how funny they were. They were upfront with playing position. Coach Willingham sees him as a wide receiver or defensive back for them, but they are willing to give him a chance at quarterback. Coach Willingham said they want a team player, and Antonio respected that.”

The next visit Bass will take looks to be to Virginia Tech on Labor Day weekend. According to Fairly, Antonio will be making an official visit to Blacksburg.

“He’s going to come down to Virginia Tech on Labor Day weekend,” Fairly said. “I haven’t worked out the final details just yet, but it’ll probably be a Friday to Sunday type of deal. I’m not sure yet though.”

Fairly puts the Hokies up with Michigan and Notre Dame as the 3 likely favorites.

“I think there is a real strong interest in Virginia Tech,” Fairly said. “Right now, I’d say Notre Dame, Michigan and Virginia Tech are the top 3. Maybe Michigan leads because they are the home state, but it’s close.”

Bass, a tremendous athlete who could play wide receiver, defensive back or quarterback on the next level, plays quarterback for Jackson. Though quarterback may be the position he prefers, it does not appear to be a big factor in his final decision.

“He’s looking for the whole package,” Fairly said. “Quarterback is probably the number 1 position he’d like to play, but he’ll go somewhere where he’s just happy being there. Plus he likes being recruited as an athlete because it gives him a lot of other options in case quarterback doesn’t work out.”

Virginia Tech is recruiting Bass strictly as a quarterback.

“Coach says he is definitely a quarterback for them,” Fairly said. “Coach [Kevin] Rogers feels that, if he commits and follows a good throwing routine, by the time he gets there as a freshman he would be right on track. They are not saying he would play right away, but his quarterback skills would be in good shape.”

Fairly expects a decision from Bass relatively quickly after the official visit to Virginia Tech. Syracuse may land a visit, but nothing has been set.

“I think he’ll decide probably before the middle of September,” Fairly said. “He
