Rumors have been circulating that 6-4, 200-pound Northwest High School (Germantown, MD) quarterback Ike Whitaker could decide very soon. According to Northwest Head Coach Randy Trivers, Whitaker is not close to a decision. Or, at least he’s not letting on if he is.
“There is nothing imminent on the horizon to my knowledge,” Trivers said. “Right now, I think it’s just something that started on the internet. In fact, I asked him yesterday if he was about to make a decision. He said ‘no’ and that he doesn’t know how that got started.”
Trivers admits his star signal caller could still make a decision before the season starts. He also feels that this process could go on longer than some expect.
“I know before that he would have liked to make his decision before his senior season,” Trivers said. “But he’s never said ‘coach, I’m close’. I’d imagine, that if he doesn’t decide before the season, this could go until December or January. He’s never indicated to me that he’s close to deciding.”
Fueling the speculation further was the fact that Whitaker made an unofficial visit to Maryland last week for a practice. Coach Trivers indicates that the trip was a good one, but Whitaker did not commit.
“It went well,” Trivers said of Ike’s visit to Maryland. “He had a chance to watch practice and to meet the quarterbacks. He’s got a lot to think about.”
If Whitaker does not decide by the time the season starts, there may be a good chance he would at least narrow his list of schools.
“If he’s still open and takes this thing into the season, I think he should narrow his list to 5 or even 3 schools,” Trivers said. “He and I have talked about this, and I think he would do that.”
Coach Trivers indicated that Whitaker hasn’t officially narrowed his list, although it still seems Tech and Maryland are strong contenders right now.
