UVa added commitment number 19 today, when William Fleming (Roanoke, VA) linebacker Darryl Gresham chose UVa over offers from Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, and Virginia Tech among others. The 6-3, 230 pound Gresham is projected as an inside linebacker, which is one of UVa’s top positional needs for 2005.
“Yes sir, I’ve committed to Virginia,” Gresham said. “First of all, I want to thank my teammates and coaches for supporting me. I chose Virginia because of their graduation rates. They graduate their players and that’s important. They are getting great players and I want to be part of the new tradition. I see the players they are bringing in, and they are players willing to go the extra mile to succeed. I want to be part of it.”
Originally, Gresham indicated he would like to make some official visits before announcing his decision. He felt he knew all he needed to know now, however, and that UVa was the place for him.
“I felt like Virginia was the place to be, so I decided to commit,” Gresham said. “I wanted to let it be known that UVa was where I wanted to be.”
Gresham looks forward to playing inside linebacker in the 3-4 system.
“Right now [UVa] has the number one rated linebacker group in the nation,” Gresham said. “That speaks for itself. They are bringing in players to continue that. I want to be one of them.”
As a junior, Gresham made over 150 tackles, including 21 in the state championship game. He earned AP second-team Group AA All-State honors as a junior. Gresham is a consensus top 10 player in the state of Virginia.
Academically, he claims he has already qualified.
