UVa continued their tremendous recruiting run today, when St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, NJ) cornerback Mike Brown verbally committed to Coach Groh and company. Brown becomes the 18th member of the 2005 recruiting class.
“ Mike Brown has committed to Virginia,” St. Peter’s Prep Head Coach Rich Hansen said this evening. “He made the decision late this afternoon.”
Brown becomes yet another top commitment from the state of New Jersey, joining Plainfield OL Eugene Monroe, Salem ILB Lamont Robinson, and Columbia OLB Denzel Burrell. At 5-9, 190 pounds, Brown can run the 40 in 4.37 seconds. A threat on both sides of the ball, he was recruited as a cornerback by UVa.
Brown chose the ‘Hoos following an unofficial visit on June 12th. He is the third prospect to commit from that weekend.
“He had a great unofficial visit the weekend of the 12th,” Hansen said. “He always felt Virginia was high on his list and he had a great experience there. It’s a great academic school. He’s excited to play for their coaching staff. He just feels like UVa is a great fit for him.”
Hansen believes Brown will likely not make any official visits this Fall.
“I think it’s firm,” Hansen said of Brown’s commitment. “You never say never, but they told Mike they weren’t going to recruit any other cornerbacks, and I think in exchange he is not going to visit anywhere else.”
One of the top cornerbacks in the East, Mike Brown has received over 20 Division I-A scholarship offers. He chose UVa over Tennessee, Notre Dame, and Rutgers among others. A good student with a 3.5 grade point average, Brown will easily qualify academically. He has scored a 960 on the SAT.
