5-9, 190 pound Bethel High School cornerback Jamar Jackson attended camp at the University of Maryland this week. He appears to have enjoyed his first camp summer camp experience for 2004, and will next appear this weekend at UVa’s summer camp. Jackson will attend Virginia Tech’s senior camp next month as well.
“The Maryland camp was cool,” Jackson said. “It was a fun experience. They taught us a lot of technical stuff. They concentrated on little things for us to work on. The Defensive Backs Coach said I’m a competitor. I think I did pretty good. One 6’4” guy got me once but that’s it. I had three picks for the day.
“I’m going to UVa this Friday and then I’m going to go to Virginia Tech’s senior camp on July 10th. I’m also going with our team to JMU’s summer camp.”
Maryland, Virginia, and Virginia Tech remain Jackson’s only three scholarship offers. Other schools showing interest include Marshall and Wake Forest. During the May evaluation period, Jackson received visits from both Virginia and Virginia Tech coaches.
“Yes,” Jackson said when asked if he spoke to coaches from UVa and Virginia Tech during the evaluation period. “They mainly talked to me about taking the SAT’s and my grades. They just told me to keep my grades up.”
Of the three schools who have offered, Jackson stated what he likes about each.
“For Virginia, I like how they practice,” Jackson said. “They play hard. Coach London is my main recruiter, and we have a close relationship.
“When I’m ever at Virginia Tech, it just feels like I’m at home. I’m also close with Coach Cavanaugh.
“The thing I like about Maryland is that they worry about the little stuff. I like Coach [Tom] Bratton. I like the set up of the campus. Everything is close together.”
Jackson remains open to any school in the recruiting process and says he is wide open right now.
“I don’t have any favorites,” Jackson said. “Everyone is equal. I’m focusing on all of them right now. I’m going to look at the atmosphere and whether or not I feel at home.”
Jackson hopes to make some official visits and says Signing Day could be the day he announces his choice.
“I want to decide around Signing Day,” Jackson said. “I want to take all of my official visits.”
