Fort Hill (Cumberland, MD) star defensive back/running back Andre Pope recently added two more scholarship offers, as Clemson and UNC have now joined Virginia Tech and Penn State on the offer list.
Recently, the 5-11, 205 pound Pope camped at UNC, which is where he received his offer after performing well against some of the camps’ top athletes.
“UNC was a good camp,” Pope said. “I left with an offer. They matched me up against the top athletes there and I did well. They like me as a defensive back.”
Pope also tripped to Georgia’s camp. He impressed as a defensive back, however Georgia would like to see more film of him on the defensive side of the ball before offering. They initially tried him out at running back.
“Georgia was a long drive, but it was a good experience,” Pope said. “At first they were looking at me as a running back, but I performed really well at defensive back so they want to see film of me there. They haven’t offered me.”
Last summer, Pope attended camp at Virginia Tech. There, he made an excellent impression on the Tech coaches which would eventually lead to a scholarship offer. The Hokies tried him out at cornerback during the camp, however Fort Hill Head Coach Barry Lattimer indicated that Tech likes Pope at both corner and safety.
Tech’s coaching staff has impressed Pope as well.
“I went to Virginia Tech last year,” Pope said. “I don’t know too much about them. I was impressed with the coaching staff…they are real cool. One thing I didn’t know but I found out was the talent of the athletes they had there.”
Pope, who wants to take his time in the recruiting process, did list some current favorites.
“I do have some favorites,” Pope said. “In no particular order, I like Clemson, Virginia Tech, and UNC. Some schools I like that I’d like to get offers from are Georgia Tech and maybe the Florida teams like the Florida Gators.
“I think I’m going to take my time unless something really comes to me and I get a feeling. Hopefully I’ll take all five official visits. I’m really weighing things out.”
Location may be a very important factor for Pope, who expressed an interest in going to college south of Maryland.
“It’s something I might want to do just to get out of the area for my Mom,” Pope said.
