UVa picked up a major commitment today, when Plainfield (NJ) offensive tackle Eugene Monroe pledged to the ‘Hoos. Monroe visited UVa this weekend for Saturday’s Junior Day and committed today.

“I called Coach D’Onofrio and told him I wanted to come,” Monroe said. “I think they had a gut feeling I might commit by the way I was on the trip this weekend. I almost committed there but decided to wait a little bit. They were definitely excited. When I told Coach London he dropped the phone and was screaming ‘whoooo.'”

Monroe, a 6-6, 320 pound offensive tackle, is one of the top prospects in the country. He is rated the number 11 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com. He chose UVa over about 40 Division I-A scholarship offers, including some of the major in the country.

Heading into the visit, Monroe didn’t think he would make a commitment to UVa, however things changed over the course of the weekend.

“Not really,” Monroe said when asked if he was thinking about committing before the weekend. “I just wanted to get another look at it. Over the weekend, I really felt that UVa was the place for me. It’s where I wanted to go so I went ahead and did it. There’s no point dragging the process out when I know that’s where I want to go.”

Though many schools will likely continue to recruit him, Monroe says he is extremely solid about his decision.

“I’m definitely solid man,” Monroe said. “I’m going to UVa. It’s all about the Cavaliers for me now.”

An excellent student-athlete, Monroe has easily qualified academically. He becomes the 14th commitment for the 2005 recruiting class.

Cushing…

Monroe made the trip this weekend with Bergen Catholic star LB Brian Cushing. He says he will try his hardest to get Cushing to join him at UVa.

“I’ll get him there,” Monroe said with a laugh. “Seriously though, I know he really liked it there so there’s a chance.”
