Phoebus standout defensive end Steven Friday made 27 tackles-for-loss and had 17 sacks last season as a junior. He earned Group AAA coaches first-team all-state honors for his performance. By the end of his career, he hopes to have broken at least one school sack record.

“My top goal personally is to get the single-season sack record,” Friday said. “I’m not sure what it is, but I’m going to try and break it.”

Friday says his strength as a defensive end is “my speed. And when I’m on the field, I try to play like an animal. I like to get in people’s minds. For next season, I’m trying to get myself stronger and gain more weight. I haven’t weighed myself recently, but I think I’m gaining some weight and I’m carrying it well.”

Four schools have offered official scholarship offers through the Evaluation period. At 6-5, 215 pounds, Friday is being recruited by some schools as an outside linebacker and some as a defensive end. He plays defensive end in high school but moves to middle linebacker on occasion.

“I have four offers,” Friday said. “Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and UNC. Syracuse, Virginia, and UNC like me as an outside linebacker. Virginia Tech likes me as a defensive end. I really like playing defensive end but it doesn’t really matter. South Carolina, Tennessee, and Maryland are also recruiting me hard.”

Friday says he is focused on preparing for his senior season as opposed to thinking about recruiting. He does not have a clear cut favorite at this point.

“No, not yet,” Friday said when asked if he had any favorites. “I’m not really sure when I’ll make a decision. I do think I’ll take some official visits. I’ll probably decide a little later, but I’m not sure. I haven’t really thought about it.”

When asked what he likes about Virginia Tech and Virginia, Friday said “I like how Virginia Tech treats you. I don’t really know anything about Virginia though.”
