George Washington-Danville safety Cameron Martin became the fifth commitment for the Virginia Tech 2005 recruiting class. We caught up with him last night to discuss his decision.

Martin on why he chose Virginia Tech…

“Basically, they are the team I grew up watching,” Martin said. “My uncle played there, so it kind of started with him. They’ve been my favorite team since I can remember. And when I come in to play, it happens to be a year they really have a need for safety. It just seemed like the best place for me.”

Martin on the impact of Coach Beamer’s visit to GW-Danville…

“It might have been a little bit of a factor,” Martin said. “I didn’t know how rare it was for a Head Coach to visit a school during the evaluation period. It showed what type of interest they had in me.”

Martin when asked if VT was the clear leader throughout the recruiting process…

“To tell you the truth, they weren’t really the only leader,” Martin said. “They’ve always been high on the list, but they weren’t the leader. UVa and NC State were right up there too. The last time I talked to you, I really didn’t have a clear leader. It all just came to me in about a week’s time.”

Martin on the possibility of playing as a true freshman…

“I’m not sure…I hope so,” Martin said. “I mean, I feel it would be an advantage for me to red-shirt so I can get stronger and learn the system, but I also think I’m ready to play right now. I’m going up there looking to be able to play early, but it’s really up to the coaches.”
