Wyoming Valley West (PA) offensive line prospect Kurt Mattes has received six scholarship offers, three more than he had at the beginning of the Evaluation period. The recent schools to extend offers include Syracuse, Connecticut, and Indiana.
“I have offers from UVa, Connecticut, Syracuse, Indiana, Vanderbilt, and Pitt,” Mattes said. “Northwestern, Michigan, Notre Dame, NC State, and Louisville have been recruiting me. Virginia Tech has called. Coach [Danny] Pearman of Virginia Tech actually called me but I haven’t had a chance to call him back yet.”
As a junior last season, the 6-6, 270 pound Mattes played tight end and defensive tackle. A likely offensive tackle on the next level, Mattes has been working hard in the weight room to add weight and strength for next season.
“I’m up to 270 pounds,” Mattes said. “I’m building up strength and getting some shape.”
Mattes had a busy Spring, traveling to several Spring games and even more Junior Days. He enjoyed all of his visits.
“I went to Virginia and Virginia Tech’s Spring games, and I went to Junior days at Penn State, Northwestern, Virginia, Notre Dame, and Pitt,” Mattes said. “Both Virginia and Virginia Tech were good times. I enjoyed all of my trips.”
In terms of favorites, Mattes says “I don’t really have any favorites. I’m still shopping around for the right fit. I’m not sure when I will decide.”
This summer, look for Mattes to appear in many summer camps. He is busy deciding which programs he will visit.
“I’m still working it out,” Mattes said of his summer schedule. “I’m starting to get some ideas, but I haven’t decided.”
