Merritt Island High School (FL) defensive end Mike Mangold was a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech heading into this weekend’s official visit to the University of Florida. Following the visit, it appears he is considering the Gators as well.
“Mike came back today from Florida, and he said ‘Coach, I’m not sure what I’m going to do’,” Merritt Island Head Coach Paul Friel said. “He said the visit to Florida went great, but he also said he still really likes Virginia Tech. He said he had a great time on both visits. I would say right now he’s still committed to Virginia Tech, but I would also say he is wavering a little.”
According to Friel, Mangold has informed Virginia Tech Defensive Line Coach Charley Wiles that he is considering Florida right now. Mangold will speak with his mother tonight to determine if he will remain committed to the Hokies.
“He came back a little panicked about it, but he’s going to talk with his mother and figure some things out tonight,” Friel said. “I told him if he was having second thoughts, he needed to call Coach Wiles and tell him. He did that, and I think he’s going to call Coach Wiles again after he and his mother are finished discussing things.”
Mangold originally committed to Virginia Tech on his official visit during the weekend of December 12th-14th. He is not considering any other programs besides Tech and Florida.
