Derrick McPhearson did not make his previously scheduled official visit to Penn State last weekend, and now plans on focusing his efforts on just three schools – Maryland, Florida, and Virginia Tech.
Currently, McPhearson admits the Terrapins and Gators may have the edge on the Hokies, primarily because he has never been to Blacksburg.
“I’ve said that Maryland and Florida are ahead of Virginia Tech, but that’s mainly because I’ve been to Maryland and Florida and I know what those schools have to offer,” McPhearson said. He makes an official visit to Tech this weekend. “I’ve never seen Virginia Tech before. Virginia Tech will be like a new world, and I’m ready to explore it. Hopefully things will go well and I’ll see what they have to offer.
“Heading into the recruiting process, I told myself I was not going to try to be biased. I want to give all of the schools an equal chance, and that’s what I’m going to do this weekend. It wouldn’t be fair to say I have any favorites, because I’ve only made one official visit.”
McPhearson, a prep star at DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Maryland, is being recruited to play wide receiver by all three programs. He feels all three are equal in terms of how productive he could be in each offensive system.
“Right now, I think all three have positives about their programs,” McPhearson said. “They are all great, and they would all be able to develop my skills to the fullest.”
Following his visit to Virginia Tech this weekend, McPhearson has scheduled an official visit to Florida for the weekend of January 30th. He made his official visit to Maryland in December.
Right now, he is not sure exactly when he will have his final decision ready.
“My decision could be anytime after my visit to Florida,” McPhearson said. “I’m just going to talk with my family and make the best decision for me and my family. As for how I will announce, there have been a few news stations that have talked to me about a press conference, so that could happen.”
In addition to being an excellent football prospect, McPhearson also excels in baseball. Recently, he attended a showcase for Major League Baseball prospects and did very well.
“The baseball showcase went very well,” McPhearson said. “Everything went great.”
McPhearson plans on playing both football and baseball on the next level.
