It appears to be a two-team race right now for John I Leonard (Boca Raton, FL) running back/cornerback prospect Damian Sims, as Virginia Tech and Kansas State have moved ahead of the pack.
“It’s really between Virginia Tech and Kansas State,” Sims said. “I’m very interested in both of those schools. I really like what the depth chart looks like for both teams. Kevin Jones is leaving and Darren Sproles will be a senior, so I could potentially play really early if I work hard enough. Both schools came to my house and spoke with my Mom. My Mom liked both of the coaching staffs a lot.”
Both Virginia Tech and Kansas State have told Sims they are recruiting him to play running back, however he will get a look at cornerback as well. He is considered an athlete, with the versatility to play either position.
Sims made an official visit to Kansas State on December 20th. He has not yet been to Virginia Tech, however is scheduled to visit Blacksburg on January 31st.
“The visit to Kansas State went very well,” Sims said. “There were a lot of good recruits there, including Brent Schaeffer and some others. It was a place I could see myself going to for the next four years. I was hosted by my good friend, [junior cornerback] Cedrick Williams.”
This weekend, Sims will make an official visit to Mississippi. South Florida and Florida State are other programs trying to land official visits. The Seminoles have not yet offered.
“I was looking at Florida State’s depth chart, and I’m not sure I’d be able to play early there,” Sims said. “They are still on me, but I don’t think they are that high now because of the depth chart. As for South Florida, they are trying to get me on an official visit but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
As a senior, the 5-9, 180 pound Sims rushed for over 1,400 yards as a tailback and had a very solid year at cornerback. He is on track to qualify academically.
Sims moved his visit to Virginia Tech back to January 31st. Why?
“I moved my visit to Virginia Tech back to the last week in January,” Sims said. “I wanted to save the best for last.”
Sims may be making the visit with his teammate, 6-3, 215 pound WR/S Hilton Pitts. Pitts has received a scholarship offer contigent upon him improving his academics.
