Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) star Purnell Sturdivant has favored the Virginia Tech Hokies for the past few months, and it does not appear anything has changed in the new year. Tech is still very much the clear leader for one of the state’s most versatile and athletic talent’s.
“Virginia Tech is still my top school,” Sturdivant. “I know that’s where I’m going to go.”
The 5-11, 215 pound athlete has scheduled a visit to Virginia Tech for January 23rd-25th. It appears he will indeed make one more official visit, with NC State being the school of choice.
“I’m still waiting on my coach to set up that visit, and I think I’ll have some news this week,” Sturdivant said of the NC State trip. “Those are probably my only two visits. I’m going to try to make both of them. I don’t feel the need to visit another school besides Virginia Tech, but at the same time it’s good to at least see something else. I know where I’m going to go, but it doesn’t hurt to at least look at another school to have something to compare.”
Sturdivant appears to be one of Tech’s top targets this year, as he has the potential to become an excellent defensive back, running back, or even linebacker. Coach Stinespring is the primary recruiter, and he appears anxious for Sturdivant to join to the Hokies.
“Coach Stinespring was really trying to get me to commit at our team banquet (laughs),” Sturdivant said. “He said I could have an effect on the other players, but actually it looks like they have done pretty good without it. They got [commitments from Landstown WR Jeremy] Gilchrist and [Indian River RB Branden] Ore. They are two good players.”
Academically, Sturdivant is a solid student, as he carries over a 3.0 grade point average and should easily qualify academically.
