Virginia Tech is truly on a roll over the past few days, as they have landed yet another verbal commitment. Merritt Island High School (FL) defensive end Mike Mangold verbally committed to Virginia Tech on his official visit this weekend, becoming the fourth commitment this weekend.

Merritt Island Head Coach Paul Friel confirmed the commitment this evening.

“I saw him today, and that’s what he told me,” Friel said. “He said, ‘Coach, I loved it, I loved the area and everything about it so I went ahead and committed.’ I thought it would be either Virginia Tech or Florida in the end, so it didn’t really surprise me.”

According to Friel, Mangold had narrowed his list to Virginia Tech, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee last week before his official to Tech. Miami, who was one of the top contenders early on, appeared to have fallen off from the rest.

“Miami was on him, but it seemed like Mike was just going away from them,” Friel said. “He narrowed his list to Virginia Tech, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee a week ago. I thought he would make at least those four visits before deciding, but he really loved Virginia Tech.”

It does not appear Mangold will make any more official visits, which is certainly good news for Tech fans.

“I told him after he said he committed that we had to call the rest of the coaches and tell them, and he said he would do that,” Friel said. “If he committed, I don’t think he would make any more. I think the best thing for him is to end everything right now since he has committed.”

At 6-3, 240 pounds, Mangold is a relentless defensive end. Coach Friel describes his star as having a “non-stop motor. He never stops playing.” He had a foot injury that kept him out of several games early this year, however Coach Friel indicated he is 100 percent right now.

A solid student, Mangold has qualified academically.
