Heading into this weekend’s official visit to the University of Virginia, Eastern Regional (NJ) offensive tackle prospect Phil Trautwein listed Michigan State and Tennessee as his two favorites.

UVA had seemed on the outside looking in, however the chances may have improved greatly after an excellent official visit.

“It was very nice,” Trautwein said. “I was hosted by Big Bart (Brian Barthelmes). He’s funny. All of the players seem really nice. They are like one big family. We went to one person’s house and there was like 20 football players there.”

Though Trautwein did not get to experience the football atmosphere like he did on previous visits to Tennessee and Michigan State, he was impressed with the program.

“I didn’t get to see the football atmosphere, but that’s not really going to be a big part of my decision,” Trautwein said. “I did get to see highlights of games at the banquet, and it looked like the fans love football down there.”

The football banquet was one of the highlights of the weekend.

“I like the banquet a lot,” Trautwein said. “Awards were given out, the seniors said their last words, and we watched the film. They also did a Christmas CD, and that was funny.”

Today, Trautwein met with Coach Al Groh before returning home. This weekend was the first time the mammoth offensive tackle had a chance to meet with Coach Groh, and he came away impressed.

“Coach Groh is very serious about his job,” Trautwein said. “He’s very serious about football. He used to coach in the NFL and he runs an NFL offense. He’s a great guy.”

Trautwein admitted he liked the rest of the coaches as well, and was impressed with the amount of recruits on campus.

“The coaches are all amazing,” Trautwein said. “They said if they get everybody they wanted to get that was on campus this weekend, they could be real contenders in a few years. They had DeMario Pressley, the number one defensive tackle there, and the linebacker [Jerod] Mayo.”

With an excellent visit, it appears UVA has indeed jumped heavily into the mix. Trautwein has one remaining visit, to the University of Florida on January 17th.

“Virginia’s definitely in it,” Trautwein said. “In fact, that’s where my Mom wants me to
